Guest relations at Sterrekopje Farm in South Africa
Sterrekopje is a biodiverse farm and wellness retreat in the Cape Winelands, where tranquil rooms, heavenly gardens and intuitive treatments combine to create a restorative sanctuary from modern life. Regenerated and restored by Nicole Boekhoorn and Fleur Huijskens, the estate includes 50 hectares of wilting vineyards and olive groves, and allows guests to find true rest. For a short stint, I had the pleasure of living and working on this piece of heaven on earth, handling all guest relations and their wellness journeys. Book your stay: sterrekopje.com
International Press for Anne Imhof - Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam
Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Hartwig Art Foundation presented Anne Imhof – YOUTH. Anne Imhof (Giesen, Germany, 1978) was invited to take over the Stedelijk’s 1,100-square-meter lower-level gallery. Combining art, architecture, light, and a sound composed especially for the occasion, she transformed the space into a labyrinthine total installation. Anne Imhof is recognized as the artistic voice of a new generation. In this 6 month project, Marjolein was responsible for the international press and organised a press trip. A group of international art critics and editors from leading publications like Monopol, Flash Art, The Art Newspaper, Artnet, and more came to Amsterdam and were hosted for two days in collaboration with Eye Filmmuseum.
Managing eco-accomodation in South Africa
The Farmstead is a luxury off-grid self catering accommodation in the winelands of South Africa and is home to the yogaschool ‘The Hålo’. The Farmstead is ensconced between heaven and earth, where the mountains of Franschhoek and waterfalls meet. You will find a carefully curated cultivation of luxury cottages, a riverside deck, walks, orchards, trees, chickens and cows to anchor a land where restorative growth, regenertion and organic togetherness emerges.
The old farm cottages, with their original footprints, have been rejuvenated using reclaimed and farm-found objects, cleverly sewn together to construct a 'farm stay luxe’ self catering experience. There are two large cottages for 8 people and five double room cottages for 4 people.
In December 2021, I had the pleasure of running this special place together with the staff. It has been my long held dream to create a place where hospitality, wellness and eco-consciousness come together, and the owners of The Farmstead let me experience the managing of such a place. Go and experience the magic yourself!
Partnership between Young Stedelijk x We Club WIELS x Les Amies du Palais de Tokyo
Motivated by a desire to come together and respond as a collective to the pandemic and its challenging impact on the artistic ecosystem, the young patrons clubs of three leading European contemporary art institutions have decided to form a partnership and organise a series of exciting multiple day events in their cities. Open to members of all three institutions, the partnership is formed between Young Stedelijk by Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, WE Club WIELS in Brussels and Les Amis du Palais de Tokyo in Paris.
Young private donors play an integral role in shaping the future of museums and patrons clubs offer fantastic opportunities for art enthusiasts to meet and network with like-minded individuals, exploring the diversity of creativity in the city and beyond, while directly supporting artists. Museums are increasingly reliant on private funding from donors.
Each patrons club hosts all international young patrons in their respective cities. Kick-off was during Brussels Gallery weekend from 9-11 September 2021. WE Club WIELS hosted the international group of young patrons for three days of cultural discoveries within Brussels.
After Brussels, Les Amis du Palais de Tokyo created a program during FIAC weekend in October 2021, curated around the solo exhibition of celebrated German artist Anne Imhof, laureate of the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2015.
In May 2022, Young Stedelijk hosted a three day art weekend for this international group in Amsterdam. This partnership and execution of all weekends was created by Diane van Impe, Olivia Anani, Marjolein van Zanten and Pien Bergshoeff.
The Farmstead Franschhoek
From January to April 2021, I lived and worked on The Farmstead in Franschhoek, South Africa. This off-grid self catering accommodation in the natural surroundings between Franschhoek and Stellenbosch is home to the yogaschool ‘The Hålo’ too. I worked on an overal marketing plan, art direction of all visuals, organised photoshoots for new branding purposes, build a mini website for the yogaschool, designed art work for their social media and events, we organised yoga retreats and full moon ceremonies, any activity to get the accommodation full again after a long Covid year. I set up the Facebook Business suite, started social media advertising with targeted audiences, SEO and cleaned up both IG accounts. We grew the accounts considerably and bookings were up. What a gift to always work with inspiring, authentic people that are passionate about what they create. This place became like home to me. www.thefarmstead.co.za
In Conversation With
Last week we had the privilege to visit Dirk Vander Kooij s studio with Young Stedelijk as part of the new series: “In Conversation With”. In this concept a YS ambassador interviews a living designer or artist whose work is part of the Stedelijk collection. I had the honour to kick off and chose to interview Dirk, whom I have admired for his beautiful furniture all made of recycled plastics (refrigerators, cds etc). So circular design that is highly desirable. Thank you Dirk and Phillipa for showing us the heart of Dirk Vander Kooij, where the magic happens and for sharing your thoughts with us! Wow, how I love being surrounded by creatives and the meeting of minds. Thank you @ysamsterdam and Ace & Tate for making this happen. Thijs Biersteker at Fondation Cartier de l'art contemporain
Dutch artist Thijs Biersteker gives trees an urgent voice in the conversation about climate change with his new work Symbiosia, a collaboration with scientist Stefano Mancuso. Symbiosia is the opening work of the exhibition Trees that premieres on 12 July 2019 at Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris.
With the premiere of Symbiosia the artist gives two trees in the iconic garden of Fondation Cartier a visual voice about one of the most important topics of today, climate change. In a world that is becoming less and less environmental in sync, the work addresses the relationship of the trees with the visitors, the environment and each other.
The real time data installation is a collaboration between artist Thijs Biersteker and world renowned botanist and scientist Stefano Mancuso and his International Laboratory of Plant Neurobiology in Florence. As a pioneer of plant neurobiology he is an advocate of the concept of plant intelligence. Mancuso provided the science behind the artwork. Balue consulted on the press release, and the international PR.
Sotheby's x TAMINIAU
Balue (Marjolein) initiated and managed a collaboration between Sotheby’s and Jan Taminiau in which Old Master paintings from Sotheby’s forthcoming sales of The SØR Rusche Collection (in London) were transported and presented in the contemporary setting of Jan Taminiau’s dynamic pop-up store in Amsterdam.
Featuring three paintings selected by Jan, the exhibition juxtaposes the classical appeal of Old Masters with the modern aesthetic of the designer’s spatial and playfully decorated space. Exceptional paintings by Adam van Breen, Edwaert Collier and Cornelis Norbertus Gysbrechts lined the store’s fresh white walls, creating an open dialogue between Jan’s debut ready-to-wear line and the innate beauty of these works, through texture, colour, line and depth.
The short exhibition offered people in Amsterdam an exclusive chance to see these paintings up close and provided these two wonderful high end brands with shared marketing activities and networking opportunities.

Studio Drift Coded Nature at Stedelijk Museum
Exhibition — 25 Apr until 26 Aug 2018
The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam presented the first solo of the succesful Dutch duo Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta (Studio Drift). Studio Drift Coded Nature became the highest valued and most attended exhibition of the Stedelijk since the re-opening in 2012. In addition to their early designs, the exhibition featured new, previously unseen work by the Dutch duo. Specially for the presentation at the Stedelijk, Studio Drift created the largest-ever installation of Fragile Future. Another highlight was Drifter, a floating concrete monolith measuring four by two by two meters. The film Drifters (2016) and the installation Materialism (2018) went on view for the first time. In total, the presentation comprised of eight of Studio Drift’s room-filling installations, together with a selection of films. Marjolein was closely involved with the preparations and execution of the exhibition from the Stedelijk side.
International Night at the museum
For a selected group of guests, Balue initiated and organised an international evening the Stedelijk Museum to experience the much credited exhibition by Dutch duo Studio Drift. The work of Studio Drift occupies a unique place at the interface between tech art, performance, and biodesign. We started at the auditorium with drinks and a gallery talk by the curator of the exhibition, followed by a visit to the exhibition in presence of the artists and curator. This evening promoted both the late openings of Fridays, and drew a new (non-Dutch speaking) audience.
